Like many other individual sports, archery has a mechanism for a competition between two archers. It is called a "Head to Head". For anyone wondering about it, this does not mean shooting at each other...

The Head-to-Head is essentially how the finals of the archery tournaments of the Olympics are shot. Our Ladder is a modification of that, taking into account the limitations of shooting at the same time as other club members.

There are in fact two ladders and archers can shoot in both. There is a handicap ladder and a non-handicap ladder. The handicap ladder uses scores on a handicap adjusted basis, using an adjustment table calculated by our Records Officer. The non-handicap works on a non-adjusted score basis.

It is envisaged that "Head-to-Head" rounds are shot at some time during a standard club target day.

The ladder is operated separately for the indoor and outdoor seasons. To give people a greater opportunity to shoot against each other (!) the initial placings at the beginning of a season are random. That means it is entirely possible for me to be shooting against Andy Somers (chuckle!).

The rules are:

  • Head-to-Head rounds are shot at 20 yds indoors, 40 yds outdoors.
    • Indoors, 60 cm face, ten zone scoring.
    • Outdoors, 1.2m face, ten zone scoring.
  • There are separate sections for each bow discipline and you may shoot in each section.
  • Male and female archers shoot in the same Ladder
  • Senior and Junior archers shoot in the same Ladder. This gives the juniors the opportunity to demolish the seniors.
  • You may only challenge the archer IMMEDIATELY above you in the ladder. This ensures that you have to work your way to the top!
  • At least one of any two archers must shoot against at least one other archer before they can have a "rematch". This is to avoid the positions of two archers "ping-ponging" backwards and forwards. (Of course, any two archers can have as many practice Head-to-Heads as they like.. however it will only count for the Ladder if one of them has shot against a Third Party).
  • Head-to-Head matches are nine arrows. (One-and-a-half ends outdoors, three ends indoors).
  • In the event of a tie, the best gold in the last three arrows will determine the winner.
  • The winner is responsible for updating the web site with the Ladder. Those who wish to be anonymous on the web site can choose a pseudonym for use on the Ladder. Please edit your own name and change it into the pseudonym of your choice at any time. If you do not have WWW access, please ensure you arrange with someone else to get the Ladder updated.
